| Workshop Packaging: |
"Plastic" on the compost heapThere was much interest in Nick op den Buijsch's workshop about environmentally friendly packaging. Moonen Natural has developed packaging based on sugarcane and corn, which are fully degradable. The materials of sugarcane can even be composted on a compost heap after use. Materials based on corn can only be processed in high temperatures, and therefore they belong in the organic waste bin. During the development of the materials, we ensured that all aspects of the chain were environmentally friendly. As we could see during the workshop, the packages look just like plastics and paper. The explanation of the composition and properties of these packaging materials were alternated with interesting tests exhibiting these properties: for instance, we could see that the sugarcane material was watertight, but that the corn-based packaging was not. We could also see that sugarcane did not go up in flames when lighted, whereas corn did. There was great interest from the participants, and there was a lot of interaction with the public. There are also challenges in this branch: for example, how do you inform the consumer that these packages can go on the compost heap or in the organic waste bin, so that they do not end up with residual waste? Gene technology, used for corn crops in the United States, proved to be a disadvantage for a number of visitors. On the website from Biologica , you will find a complete report of the Bio-congress.
