Innovative bio-packaging for the Rabobank |
Moonen Packaging and NatureWorks have developed innovative bio-packaging for the Rabobank
A joint initiative of Moonen Packaging, NatureWorks and Rabobank Netherlands has resulted in a unique, fully compostable packaging.
Due to the great (environmental) advantages that the packaging offers, Rabobank has recently decided to wrap its member and customer magazines 'Dichterbij' and 'Wijzer' in 100% compostable Ingeo bio-packaging. The Rabobank underlines its policy of social responsibility as well as its sustainability objectives with this decision. They are the first company in Europe to use this crystal-clear packaging.
The Rabobank had been on the lookout for transparent bio-packaging since 2006. They had difficulty in finding a suitable alternative as milk-white bio-packaging did not meet Rabobank's requirements. Communication managers, for example, wanted fully transparent packaging so the cover of the magazine could be fully appreciated. Moonen Packaging and NatureWorks, the supplier of the raw material (Ingeo), have developed a suitable alternative for the 15,000 plus kilogram of packaging that the Rabobank uses each year. The raw material basis for this crystal-clear packaging is lactic acid, which is obtained from vegetable sugars. This bio-packaging has a number of advantages: its transparency is many times greater than that of the packaging used to date and of bio-packaging alternatives based on starch. The raw material (lactic acid) is renewable as it is vegetable based and therefore inexhaustible. This inexhaustibility is completely in line with the Cradle to Cradle philosophy. Significantly less greenhouse gasses are emitted and less fossil energy is used during the production of Ingeo than during the production of traditional synthetic materials.
The packaging has been tested intensively and complies with the European composting norm EN-13432. This makes the packaging suitable for garden waste disposal. The packaging can be recognised by the seedling logo. The packaging also complies with the biomass report of the Cramer commission (July 2006).
The Rabobank anticipates that the introduction of this new packaging will convince other companies of the (environmental) advantages of bio-packaging.
